Pregnancy 101 | Pregnancy Vomiting
http://www.lumalove.com/ Our discussion clip is vomiting during pregnancy. Up to 50% of all women experience nausea and early morning sickness during the first part of pregnancy. For some of those women, this morning sickness turns into severe vomiting. When I had both my kids, I vomited for 20 weeks of pregnancy for the first two hours every single morning with my head in the toilet thinking I was going to die.
It was that bad and that is how bad it can be. If it is lasting an hour or two first thing in the morning you might just puke your guts out and if that is what happens, then it is very normal. It is called early morning sickness, but in general, you feel fine then for the rest of the day, and you can eat regularly.
However, there is a condition in pregnancy that is called hyperemesis gravidarum which means excess severe vomiting in pregnancy where the woman cannot hold on to any food at all. Her body starts to compromise, and if this is the case and if you are not eating anything at all, then the likelihood is that you are going to use up all your reserves of body fats and all your nutrients. You can end up becoming very seriously ill, and it can also be a huge problem for your baby.
If the pregnancy vomiting is excessive and it is all day long, and you are not holding anything down, please go and see your provider.
Now, you might be good earlier in pregnancy and then for no reason you start to vomit or throw up. Well, it could be just a stomach virus going, you could definitively get that anywhere in your pregnancy that can last for 24 hours. Normally, if it is a stomach virus and you have vomited and you might have a bit of diarrhea, but if you indeed start to throw up and you are throwing up all day long, please inform your provider.
Another reason for vomiting in pregnancy, especially as you advance in pregnancy, could mean that there is a medical problem going on which could be anything from gastritis to the gallbladder to high blood pressure. Many times when pregnant women get high blood pressure, they feel normal, and they do not feel there is anything wrong with them at all. But if they start getting severe heartburn or start to vomit with a history of high blood pressure, then it could mean that they are getting preeclampsia.
If your vomiting is only lasting a short period and there is a pattern to it every day at a particular time, then that is normal. But, if it is in excess and prolonged, then it is abnormal. The more you educate yourself about all the different scenarios that could happen to you during pregnancy then the likelihood is that you will have a better pregnancy outcome.
