Saudi Arabia Women A Midwives Story – 9
http://www.lumalove.com/ The only way Midwife Hannah reckoned she could get out through the security gates to meet the mayor of the City to plead her case was in the trunk of her friend’s car. If someone caught her, she would be put in prison or even murdered. Her friend knew that if someone knew what he was doing, they would kill him for sure. Taking a single woman outside the compound was breaking the law and in the trunk of his car was breaking more laws, plus he was the head of security.
Both of them reckoned it was worth the risk. The working conditions were horrific, and Hannah’s friend knew her situation and that she wanted to leave. Sometimes in life, we take chances for friends. Hannah remembers getting into the trunk of his car, covering herself up with loads of blankets. She can hear everything going on outside. With that, she can hear him drive up by these secured compound gates.
Her friend was probably shaking with fear. She knew the security check inside and under the cars. If they were to open the trunk of the car, it was game over. Rolled up in a ball, in the trunk of a car, dressed in black, covered with blankets Hannah began to pray the rosary that no one would find her. Her heart was in her mouth as every second passed she thought she was so close to death it was not funny.
After what felt like hours, the rosary prayer worked, the car passed inspection, and she left the city in the trunk of her friend car. She went to her interpreter’s friends house whose father was the City Mayor. He was such a nice man. Hannah pleaded her case. She felt these crowd of Irish people running the hospital should not be doing so. Hannah had a lot of concerns and wanted to leave. He assured Hannah he would investigate her accusations and promised her she would leave Saudi safely.
Hannah gets back into the compound safely once again in the trunk of her friend’s card saying her rosary covered in black and blankets. The next morning Hannah heard a big knock on her door. A big army jeep shows up with full military personnel, carrying big machine guns, rows of bullets. They were ready to go to war every second of the day. They screamed and shouted at her and told her to get into the jeep and took her to a building. Hannah had no clue where she was going.
Hannah entered the building, and they put her into a room. As soon as Hannah enters the room she had a spot light beamed onto her face. These are things you would see on the television. Hannah thought they were going to interrogate her. Fear instantly took over her body. There were no other lights turned on except for the spotlight in her face. Her sense was that the room was full of people. She didn’t know who was there, they were probably military people, hospital administrators. She could not see anyone.
Someone gave her a chair and pushed on her shoulders to sit down. All Hannah can remember was that they asked her questions. She began to answer questions and then she had no memory of what happened. Hannah thinks they might have drugged her because how can she not remember leaving that building? Hannah cannot remember going back to her living accommodation. No recall at all. At some point, Hannah remembers awakening, feeling very groggy as if she had taken some medication.
The phone rang, and it was the hospital administration, informing her to go over pick up her passport she was going home. Hannah thought WOW it was like she had won the lottery the impossible happened, she was going to be free. Immediately, she took the bus over to the main office. She went in thinking she was going to pick up her passport without any problems. Hannah had no recall of the prior day’s interrogation. She had no clue what had happened in the mean time.
The human resource person goes to hand Hannah her passport and then slams the passport down onto the desk. He was an Irish man, and suddenly he became a lunatic. The veins in his neck start to pulsate. His face was red with anger and suddenly, he grabbed Hannah by the neck. He put his two hands around her neck and lifted her up against the wall. Hannah felt her head smacked against the walls; her veins were pulsating, her feet were off the ground. The human resource person was trying to strangle her. The other person was behind the desk screaming at his colleague “don’t kill her, don’t kill her. We will be in more trouble if we kill her”. He jumps over the desk and knocks the guy down onto the floor. It all happened so quickly Hannah didn’t have time to comprehend what happened.
Suddenly they threw the passport at her informing her there would be a bus coming to pick her up the next morning. Finally, Hannah was able to exit Saudi learning that they had fired several people for their unprofessional conduct at the hospital base.
